Hands-on training combining classroom, simulated, and live site experience. Develop the skills and knowledge to control traffic and implement traffic management plans on category 1 roads.

Training Options

  • Face-to-face classroom delivery with simulated traffic control and traffic management activities
  • Includes theory (knowledge questions) and practical demonstrations
  • Completion of multiple practical traffic management setups
  • Delivered in accordance with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) South Australia and Austroads Temporary Traffic Management requirements.

Duration

  • Classroom & Simulated Training: 3 Days
  • Workplace Practical Training: 20 hours traffic control on a Category 1 road
  • Completion of three (3) different traffic management setups based on approved traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes
  • Final live site practical assessment conducted on a Category 1 road

Live site practical training and final assessment must be completed within six (6) months of attending the classroom and simulated training

You may be eligible for subsidised training through the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Call CITB on (08) 8172 9500 or visit their website www.citb.org.au to check your eligibility.

CITB subsidy is subject to eligibility and CITB approval. Subsidy amounts and conditions may change and annual caps may apply. Please confirm your eligibility with CITB before enrolling.

Additional fees may apply for travel, accommodation and critical resource requirements for regional or workplace-based delivery.

  • RIIWHS303 – Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices

Course Outcome

On successful completion, you’ll receive:

  • Nationally Recognised Statements of Attainment for:
    • RIISS00058 Traffic Controller Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads
    • RIISS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Street and Low Volume Rural Roads
  • Temporary Traffic Management Card issued by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) South Australia

Completion of this course does not guarantee employment. Issuance of certification and cards is subject to successful assessment and regulatory requirements.

Entry Requirements

You must:

  • Hold CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry or equivalent
  • Provide valid photo ID (driver’s licence, passport, or proof-of-age card)
  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) – apply free at www.usi.gov.au
  • Wear appropriate PPE: long-sleeve shirt, long trousers, and steel-capped boots (hi-visibility vest will be supplied by RETS if required)
  • Be able to read, write, speak and understand English at a level sufficient to follow safety instructions and communicate effectively in the workplace

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital Skills Requirements

All participants are required to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital skills (LLND) assessment prior to enrolment.

This assessment is designed to ensure that all participants have the necessary skills to fully engage with the course content and assessment requirements. It is not intended to create barriers, but rather to support participants by identifying any areas where additional assistance may be needed, helping to set everyone up for success.

If you have any concerns regarding literacy or numeracy, our staff can provide guidance and access to support services at no additional cost. Our goal is to ensure that all participants are confident and capable of safely and effectively completing their training.
